It seems the effects of the economic crisis know no bounds.

Wearing your heart on your sleeve is one thing, but wearing the economy on your epidermis in the form of sallow, dull and dry skin is quite another.  But while we don’t yet have a solution to the debt crisis, real estate bust or Wall Street’s indiscretions, it turns out we can address some of the symptoms … when it comes to skin, that is.

While everyday skin conditions can be complex, the solutions don’t have to be. That’s why our products are based on a philosophy of Multi-Med Therapy—using the right medicines and active cosmetics, in the right formulations, in the right order. As practicing dermatologists, Dr. Rodan and Dr. Fields know that treating the underlying cause of a problem works and yields long-term benefits.

To see real changes in your skin, you must use real medicines. Our product development strategy is to combine OTC (over-the-counter) medicines and active cosmetic ingredients to create safe and effective formulations. We take safety and efficacy very seriously, and we know that it takes the right concentration of an OTC drug or active cosmetic to achieve the desired result without adverse effects. This understanding and expertise comes from Dr. Rodan and Dr. Fields’ years of experience in treating their patients, and they are the inspiration for the products we create.

Your skin has attitude…See what it say about you.

Think you’re not out in the sun? Think again. On an average day, do you:

  • Drive to work around 9 a.m.?
  • Leave the house or office to run errands or go out for lunch?
  • Drive home around 5 p.m.?

If you’re like us and answered “yes” to any of these questions, you’re getting at least 20 minutes of sun every day, and that doesn’t include sitting near a window or spending additional time outdoors. Your best bet is to assume you’ll get some exposure, and make sunscreen a daily habit – rain or shine.

As of December 2012, the FDA will be enforcing new sunscreen regulations in an effort to help people stay better protected from the sun. At Rodan + Fields, we couldn’t be happier about the new regulations. We’ve been on our soapbox for years and are glad the FDA is finally holding companies to a higher standard. Here’s the 411 on what the new regulations mean for SPF:

  • Only SPF 15-50+: This is the range that can claim to reduce the risks associated with sun exposure. The days of SPF 90 are over – the highest you’ll find is SPF 50+.
  • More effective broad spectrum sunscreens: Only formulations with proportionate UVA and UVB coverage can claim to be broad spectrum.
  • No more waterproof sunscreens: Even the best sunscreens are only water-resistant, so always reapply after getting wet.

Having formulated RF sunscreens to the Doctors’ high standards from the beginning, it was no surprise that all our SPF products have already passed the new regulations with flying colors.

Stay protected from head to toe by adding these great sunscreen products to your broad spectrum regimen sunscreen:

Remember, the sun is out 365 days a year. Our Rodan + Fields UV Wristbands are the perfect way to remind you to be diligent with sun protection. Ask your Consultant for more details.

When a patient enters our offices, her skin tells us a story about her past habits and future appearance – her PerSKINality, if you will. From the amount of sleep she gets each night and the amount of time she’s spent in the sun, to the skincare she uses and the genes she’s been blessed with, everything plays a role.

To bring this personalized dermatology experience to the home, we’ve developed a custom diagnostic tool to help identify who you are and what you need to help your skin go the distance, no matter what yourPerSKINality.

The tool was designed to “think like a derm.” We spent countless hours customizing and fine-tuning the image analysis software so that it identifies the issues you should be treating first. It’s not always what you expect, and that’s okay. It’s human nature to get fixated on issues that aren’t necessarily the most important for you to treat.PerSKINality is designed to help you identify the issue that we as dermatologists believe should be addressed to make the biggest difference in your skin and provide you with the right solution. And through PerSKINality communities, you can connect with people who share your same skin issues.

Find out your PerSKINality. Take the guesswork out of determining the most effective skincare program for you to help you end 2012 with the best complexion of your life. It’s never too soon or too late to take control of your skin’s destiny.

Skin is a beautiful thing … wear it well.

MYTH: Adult acne can be treated the same way as teenage acne.

“All acne is hormonally related, whether you’re 16 or 61,” says Katie Rodan, MD, codeveloper of Rodan + Fields skin care company and a dermatologist in San Francisco. But your skin changes in important ways once you stop worrying about prom dates — chiefly, it’s more sensitive and not able to tolerate the harsh treatments designed for teens. Read More

As summer fades and autumn brings cooler temperatures and more overcast days, some of my patients complain of not looking or feeling their best. Some prefer the look of a sun-kissed glow. Others frequently observe that their mood is affected by the lack of sunshine, a phenomenon known as Seasonal Affective Disorder. Fortunately as we shift seasons, there are some simple solutions to help you maintain that inner and outer summer glow long into winter.

If a little color makes you feel better about your appearance, maintain a subtly bronzed look with a high quality sunless tanner. It’s the healthiest way to warm up your appearance and keep you looking and feeling healthy from head to toe. A slightly darker shade of mineral powder will also give you a warm glow.

Take care of yourself from the inside too by ingesting a vitamin D supplement. The sun isn’t the only source of this valuable vitamin and it’s certainly not the safest. Make an oral vitamin D3 capsule part of your weekly routine. Vitamin D has been linked to a bevy of health benefits including bone health, immune health, skin health, the list goes on and on.

If you still can’t beat the blues, try using an artificial light box specifically manufactured for this purpose. Exposing the eyes to a bright light, can alter your mood by releasing endorphins and resetting your body’s natural circadian rhythm. Simply turn it on and orient it toward your face (I’ve been told especially aim it in the direction of your right eye) as you’re eating breakfast or putting on your make-up.  Give it a week to see if it helps.

Try these three tips and soon you’ll not only stop singing the blues, you’ll be humming a happy and healthy tune!
